about

Stop! Look! Listen! The dreams of those of us who grew up in the UK in the 1970s are still haunted by memories of public information films that were intended to educate, persuade and above all warn us of hidden dangers.

Local authorities had long been using film to spread their public health messages. But the 'official' information film came of age in WWII, when it was used by government to guide the public through austerity and a life under fire. The 1960s and 70s saw a public information 'golden age', with hundreds of short films launched on to the small screen to cajole the British public into binning their litter, driving carefully and not putting a rug on a polished floor. Children of the 70s are unable to suppress memories of a world of dangers - from roads and railway tracks to fridges, farmyards, ponds, pylons and paedophiles - and a legion of characters including the Green Cross Code Man, Charley the cat and the chilling Spirit of Dark and Lonely Water.

lyrics

Stranger
Danger
Be careful on the road
Think once
Think twice
Follow the country code

Nightmares you’ll find
In your tiny mind
Public information
That you scorned
You’ve been warned

Paedos
In speedos
Wait in your swimming pool
It’s scary
Be wary
Follow the golden rule

If you’re home alone
You’re in the danger zone
Public information
Comes for free
On TV

That branch won’t take your weight
Says the reaper by the lake
Went to play by railway tracks
Now he’s never coming back

You can’t escape your fate
You will asphyxiate
In an abandoned fridge
Under a railway bridge
