Whether you have a hole in your sole, or hole in your soul, Emperor Penguin promise to make whole the toad in your hole.
Although Emperor Penguin were first to identify the hole in your soul, there have, as observed by the BBC radio show Round The Horne in 1965, been other times, other toads and other holes.
We salute one of the forgotten men of British science, Robert Capability Lackwind, the inventor of Toad in the Hole. Before Lackwind's creation burst upon an astonished world there was the Wookey Hole, the coal hole, and the Black Hole of Calcutta, which was claimed to have been invented by a Mr Singh of Rotherhithe. Nobody believed him because he used to claim all sorts of things, including that he was heir apparent to the throne of Lapland, and even on one occasion that he was Lily Langtry - a claim quickly discredited by a police doctor and Edward the Seventh. Holes there were aplenty but not a toad as far as the eye could see. Capability experimented with all kinds of crude toads, but people scoffed. "Look at his crude toad," they sneered. "It's a mockery."But he persevered with true British grit and in 1862 he produced the first gritty British sausage, or Lackwind's folly, as it was known. And the rest is history.
